100th Day of School Activities

The 100th day of school is a pretty big deal when you are in kindergarten and first grade! Growing up, I never remember celebrating this day in elementary school. Now, it’s totally a “thing”! For my first graders, our day was filled with making 10 sets of 10 as we counted to 100 and celebrated the fabulous number.  There were so many activities that we could do, yet I wanted to stick to as NORMAL of a schedule as possible! Here is how I gave us a fun-filled 100th day of school activities without straying too far from our normal routine and schedule!

Math

We started with our normal Mr. Harry’s song.  Throughout the year we do a different one each day or week, depending on our focus.  Not only is a great brain break, but it’s a fun way for the kids to practice a skill. Plus, add some music and it just makes concepts easier for kids to remember! For this song, when we see the multiples of 10 we always yell out how many sets of ten the number is.
For our lesson, we began with reading this classroom favorite, Centipede’s 100 Shoes. You know how much I love integrating literacy every chance I get!
We then did some math problem solving as we figured out how many shoes each teacher’s class needed to make if we had 5 teachers and 100 shoes.  We used our 100s chart to figure this out.  It took my little group of smarties all of 3 minutes to figure this out. I was impressed!!
Each child colored a shoe or two and we were set!

(Note to self: Draw and write on him before you hang him up on the tile! It was so hard and things came out so uneven.  Those eyes just look weird!)

Shared Reading

We then sang Happy 100th Day to everyone with this simple, fun song.

More Math

We made hats that told the story of 10. 10 sets of 10, of course. We used two different colors and finger painted. Our rule is always that we finger paint with one color per finger.

Snack

Having a snack is our norm because we eat lunch at 10:30! (That’s what I call brunch. Ha ha!) We made a 100th day trail mix. (Nothing fancy).  Because there are so many restrictions on what we can give the littles at school, we made the snack, and then the kids had the option of taking it to lunch if they wanted or saving it for home.

In an effort to save copy paper and use the huge stack of manilla paper I had, we just made simple mats together following my folding directions!  It got the job done and we worked our hand muscles as we folded!

We did a scavenger hunt for 100 Hershey’s Kisses.  Each kiss had a number on the bottom and then was hidden around the classroom.  My friends had to find the kisses and then place them on the giant 100s chart without numbers! On my goodness! This was a little crazy but so good! I just stood near the chart and very easily had an informal assessment as I watched who knew number patterns well and who didn’t.Go on a hunt for 100 kisses on the 100th day of school!
