World Read Aloud Day is right around the corner. This is a day we celebrate reading, specifically, reading aloud to kids! This year is the 15th anniversary, so let’s “blow it up” big!! What is better than a day full of engaging reading activities? My 6 year old would say only one thing: A bubble gum themed day! Let’s look at some bubble bum read aloud day activities for kids!

Bubble Gum Books for Kids

It’s not often you read books about candy! These bubble gum themed books are engaging for kids and great for teaching reading comprehension!

“Pop” Into a Good Book

Kids love to try things other kids are chatting about, so why not talk about books? Have kids share three books that they enjoy reading as suggestions for their friends to “pop” into! You can have them list them with a picture and the title. You can also have kids draw a picture of their favorite part, and then they can talk about that part as they make their suggestions. The key is to allow kids time to share their book suggestions, too!

Have kids sit in a circle and share with the whole group, or they can be paired up to share, too!

Blow Through a Retell

After reading aloud bubble gum books, it’s time to get the kids talking and thinking about their reading. This is a great time to focus on reading comprehension skills such as:

  • Retelling with Story Elements
  • Visualizing
  • Making Connections (text to text)
  • Author’s Purpose
  • Sequencing
  • Making Predictions
  • Facts and Opinions

“How to Blow a Bubble” Writing Extension

Though this isn’t technically in the category of read aloud day activities, it does require reading skills. Writing causes students to use their phonics skills and critical thinking skills as they write about how to blow a bubble. Together, you can talk about the importance of sequencing the events correctly and using their phonics knowledge to write the sounds they hear as they are sounding out words to put pen to paper.

Remember, reading is input, and writing is output.
