Build a Turkey Writing Assessment

One project we have been working on during our writer’s workshop time is writing a story with hdetails. Some writing curriculum call this a “small moment”. As we finish up a unit, we talk about the writing conventions we have learned and focused on. Ya’ll, this is tough! Several students will have a story with a BME in their mind, but when they write it, they leave out crucial parts. To guide us through writing conferences, I like to use these visual writing assessment crafts, like this Build a Turkey writing assessment. Today I’m sharing the details of how this works in the classroom.

This turkey writing assessment is a great way to have students focus on writing conventions you have been focusing one. Writing with a beginning, middle, and end, and using periods, capitals, and spaces are some of the things we have been working on! My students definitely need reminders of these writing conventions this time of year.

Here is a picture of one of the original times I did this writing craft assessment with my kids! Look how cute they turned out!

First, have your students complete a writing piece. I included several templates to choose from.

Then, use the checklist and feathers to have your students review their own writing to make sure they have what they need. I love seeing how proud my students are of their own work! Activities like these are a great way to have purposeful crafts in your classroom.

Then, confer with your kids. Go over their writing and ask them to help you find evidence of the rubric you guys both decided on. If they had the part, they earn a feather. If not, let them correct their writing and come back to earn the feather.

Check out the Build-a-Turkey Writing Craft Assessment to use with your little ones this week! I’d love to see how they turn out!

Finally, if you love writing crafts with a purpose, you will love my All Year Writing Crafts Bundle to save money and be set for the entire year.
